[12/2025] Interested in aviation operations research but confused on where to find data and their coverage of flights?  We report an inventory of flight event and surveillance data sources spanning the US Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration and third party sources.

[4/2025] Updating airport surface layout GIS data on taxiways, apron areas and runways can be time consuming.  Tomek Gradzki created the Airport Layout Updator to use airplane surveillance movement to automatically update airport surfaces based with widths based on aircraft fleets and FAA design guidelines.  Congrats Tomek on your publication!

[6/2023] Congrats to Sam Alsalous on his accepted Transportation Research Record publication on parsing deicing times at Chicago-O'hare Airport (ORD) using ASDE-X data.  This research helps aid in determining capacities of airport deicing lanes and facilities.  You can access the publication here.

[1/2023] Our Taxi Event Extractor tool was highlighted in Virginia Tech's news and the local news!  This is the result of amazing work from graduate researchers Dr. Navid Mirmohammadsadeghi, Mia Li, Dr. Osama Alsalous, Nancy Kaur and Tomek Gradzki.

[4/2022] Mihir Rimjha received the Integrated Communication, Navigation, & Surveillance Conference Best Student Paper! Airspace restrictions, such as those around airports, will increase flight distances and costs for Urban Air Mobility customers.  To see how this will affect UAM commuter demand, check out Mihir's paper here.

[1/2022] Congrats to Sam Alsalous!  We received the Fred Burggraf Award for our paper on flight times in the terminal airspace (Check it out here!).  The award recognizes excellence in transportation research by researchers 35 years of age or younger whose papers have been published under the sponsorship of any Technical Activities Division Standing Group.
